Latin-Funk-Calypso version of the jazz standard “Stardust” transcends the Smooth Jazz genre. One of the highlights from Volume Two of Tobin Mueller’s latest opus “Standard Deviations”. (Volume One contains the uptempo arrangements, while Volume Two is a totally chill yet highly inventive rendering of the best jazz ballads of the century.) This track features Woody Mankowski on soprano sax, with Tobin Mueller on keyboards. Although the jazz chord substitutions make this arrangement unique, simplicity is at its core, an oasis of calm in an album of compressed ideas and restless diversity.
“Stardust” was written by Hoagy Carmichael in 1927. It was his first big hit. He would later write “Georgia On My Mind” & “The Nearness of You” – both of which appear on “Standard Deviations” as well.
“Standard Deviations” is a 2-volume collection of the greatest Jazz Standards of all time… re-imagined. Melodies deviate one into another, styles deviate into related genres, and arrangements deviate from the standard originals creating a fresh, hip, innovative sound. Contemporary jazz musicians bind together blues, funk, fusion, smooth, new age and post-bop jazz, depending on the arrangement. 33 classics arranged into 24 tracks over 2 CDs.
