Check out our interview with J.Rob (below) and his video “The Legacy” (Above)
IR: Let’s get to know a little bit more about you and how you grew up. So where do you consider hometown and what type of kid were you growing up?
J.Rob: I definitely consider Phoenix, Arizona my hometown. It’s where I was born & raised so it’s a part of me. Anytime I go out of town & think of possibly living somewhere else, I get home & I see why I love it here. Growing up I was always into entertainment. Whether it was singing or dancing at family reunions, entertainment was in me.
IR: How old were you when you developed an interest in music?
J.Rob: I developed an interest in music before kindergarten. My father was an artist himself so even as a toddler I can recall being in the studio during sessions & being a part of the creation of music. The atmosphere.
IR: What was the first album you ever listened to? Can you remember back that far?
J.Rob: Man, If I can try to remember that far back it was probably the Blackstreet Album. In my opinion a classic. Maybe because it was one of the first albums I ever consistently listened to. It would be that one or Usher’s “My Way” Album. I remember saying “Bad Ass” when usher started rhyming on “My Way” & my pops giving me the look but at age 4 or 5 I had no idea what I was saying. So I would laugh it off.
IR: When and how did you begin your journey in the world of music?
J.Rob: My journey in music began because of my father. He had me writing music right after I finished my school work. So before the video games, before the basketball hoop outside, it’s was writing rhymes. I couldn’t stop until all the rhymes made sense & until I understood the concept. I am grateful for him doing that, because he always told people that he saw something In me. Unfortunately he passed in 2003 when I was 10 years old, but the last year I got to spend with him truly made me ME. It made me love music.
IR: What influences shaped your musical style?
J.Rob: Growing up my Dad played a lot of Usher, Dru Hill, Jagged Edge, Diddy, Fab, Nelly, Dr.Dre , Snoop. So There was no specific style or genre that influenced me. I think the fact that there was so much different music being played it influenced me in multiple ways.
IR: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard it before?
J.Rob: I would describe my style as someone who can speak REAL, but can also get the mood poppin. Whether that’s a Fabolous, A Kid Ink, or a Wale. The decision is on them.
IR: Do you write a lot by yourself or do you have a partner or a group of people you work with?
J.Rob: I write by myself, most of the time I’m just on the mic by myself & hit record. If I like it I keep it, if not those few bars are erased.
IR: What is your main goal at this point?
J.Rob: My main goal is what it has always been. It’s to provide for those, who have provided for me. To give people happiness through my music & to be able to make sure my family never feels struggle again.
IR: Have you learned any lessons so far and if so, what are they?
J.Rob: I’ve learned what everybody should know, & that’s that it doesn’t happen over night. Now with hard work & dedication you can make it happen faster than your opponent. But, with hard work & patience it will come.
IR: Are there any artists you wish to work with in the future?
J.Rob: I would love to have the opportunity to work with Kid Ink. I’ve opened up for him Multiple times out here in Phoenix. Twice in 2012, & now once this year in August 2014. I watched him come up over the last 4 years & it’s extremely motivating.
IR: If you could create your dream tour, who would be a part of it?
J.Rob: My dream tour would include myself , Kid Ink, Fabolous, Drake, Wale, & Pusha T
IR: Where can we find your music?
J.rob: I can be found on YouTube. Anything I drop I usually drop a video with it. I feel people are more likely to commit to a visual than just audio.
IR: We ask all the artists we interview, what’s the best piece of advice someone’s ever given to you?
J.Rob: The best advice anyone has ever given me is to be patient. Believe that what you have faith in will come in time. Manifestation is the key, & if you have faith, you will attract all that you set yourself to receive.
